LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD,
Whitehall, S.W.
15th January, 1908.
Sir,
I am directed by the Local Government Board to advert to Sir C. P. Lucas's letter of the 6th instant, enclosing copy of a dispatch from the Governor of Hong Kong, and to state that they will cause to be prepared and forwarded to you a statement giving the particulars asked for therein, as far as the information in their
possession will enable them to do so. The statement
will show, for the latest years for which the particulars are available, i.e. the year 1905-06, the population, assessable value, rates, and local debt of Bristol, Hull, Southampton, Liverpool, Sunderland and Cardiff, together
with the amount of Local Taxation Licence Duties
collected therein.
The Board direct me to add that, as regards
the City of Aberdeen, the Local Government Board for
Scotland may be able to furnish you with the required
particulars, and also that it would seem desirable that
reference should be made by you to the Treasury for the
information asked for with regard to Imperial Taxation (excluding the produce of the Local Taxation Licence Duties)
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
